The November Witches by Jennifer Claessen ~ Blog Tour & Guest Post

The November Witches is the enchanting sequel to The October Witches by Jennifer Claessen. Clemmie, a well-meaning new witch, is so relieved the magical month of October is over. No more magic, at least for a while, so she can concentrate on trying to make amends for everything that went wrong as she found her magic.

It promises to be a calm month until a knight shows up at their door. Apparently, he’s on a noble and honourable quest but the young witches can’t make sense of what he wants. Then another knight shows up at school. The armour-clad pair seem nice enough but are definitely a sign that there’s magic around when there shouldn’t be! A third knight, galloping on horseback, is definitely not nice! He vows to slay the witches as he thunders towards them! Clemmie must find a way to stop the knights and save her family!

A Family Tree by Jennifer Claessen

There are quite a lot of witches in the A Month of Magic series!

The family has two branches: the Merlyns and the Morgans. In The October Witches there were goodies versus baddies but now as we enter November, things are even messier and more complicated.

But there are the same five coven elders and so this is a reintroduction to them! When writing these five older witches, I imagined a rainbow with young hags Clemmie as orange and Mirabelle as purple. Here are the rest of the colours:

Prudence Merlyn: Aunt Prudie

  • Probably, controversially!, my favourite of the coven elders, Aunt Prudie is a hedge-witch.
  • Aunt Prudie looks very, very old. She is wrinklier and more gnarly than tree bark
  • She only ever wears very dirty green overalls. She has leaves in her hair and mud under her fingernails from tending to her allotment.
  • She prefers plants to people but in The November Witches, her garden is about to go big. Way too big!

Constance Merlyn: Aunt Connie

  • Bossy Aunt Connie is a hearth-witch.
  • She has a big cauliflower of puffy white hair and cooks and bakes incredible food, including some amazing pies.
  • She always wears a flowery frilly red apron with big pockets full of wooden spoons and other kitchen implements.
  • She is a bit defeated by the failure of their October plans at the beginning of The November Witches but by the end, she will have her heat back and become a whole new witch!

Patience Merlyn: Mum

  • Bright and sunny, Mum is a home-witch.
  • Mum loves clothes, especially big beautiful yellow gowns. She works at a drycleaners when not dealing with her magic
  • Mum is gracious, kind, really sweet. Good natured and kind, she tries to see the best in everyone. She smiles a lot.

And then there’s the problem of Felicity Merlyn, Aunt Flissie (blue!) and Temperance Merlyn, Temmie (brown!), who both begin the month of November not feeling too well…

As you’ll see, I chose these names as they have meanings. I’ve heard them called ‘virtue’ names before and they’ve been really fun to play with. Patience is very patience! And Prudence is very prudent, especially with her words which she doesn’t use many of!

So that just leaves the Morgans and the young hags for you to explore and get to know this autumn!
