Dragon Destiny & Space Blasters: Suzie Saves the Universe by Katie & Kevin Tsang

Katie & Kevin Tsang are a children’s lit writing dream team! This week I’ve had the joy of reading two of their upcoming books: the final instalment in the epic Dragon Realm series and the first of a fun new chapter book series for readers age 6-9.

I can’t believe the Dragon Realm series is coming to an end (I’m secretly hoping there will be more adventures yet)! Dragon Destiny picks up right where Dragon Rising left off – a rip in the barrier between the dragon and human realms means dragons are falling though. People have no idea what’s going on! Adults try to sort it out but they are getting nowhere fast. It’s up to Billy and the rest of the gang to find a way to peace.

I was immediately caught up in this fast-paced, magical adventure. These stories slip down so easily and are dangerously addictive. The risk to the human world is an interesting twist on all the peril that has come before. The children have even more at stake as they try to put things right.

They embark on a magical archaeological mission to discover the history of dragon magic. I love the wisdom of Glorious Old – the first ever dragon. The children must prove their loyalty and strength showing just what fantastic characters they are: wonderful role models for integrity, self-belief and hope.

I have loved this series from the very beginning and was thrilled to be able to include an extract from the first book, Dragon Mountain, in my Contemporary Children’s Literature comprehension book for children in Years 5 & 6. When I trialled the extract and questions with a Year 6 class, they were so intrigued by the story, insisting I bring in the full book for them to read. Many of them asked their parents for the book so they could read it at home. It’s a story that has stayed with me for its unique storyline, mix of cultural backgrounds and honest portrayal of kids in the midst of a crazy, magical adventure.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster Children’s and NetGalley for this brilliant book!

From the very first page, Space Blasters: Suzie Saves the Universe promises creativity, laughs and a kid-captivating story!

Suzie Wen is an inventor at heart. Even when things go terribly wrong, she keeps trying. Even when her parents ban her from building new inventions for a whole month, she fills her notebook with ideas (and maybe just has a little go at building some of them).

When her latest invention goes very wrong, she finds herself transported onto a spaceship. Captain Jane, Spaceman Jack and Five-Eyed Frank are the Space Blasters – a groups of brave astronauts saving the universe from one disaster after another. Suzie has no choice but to put on a spacesuit and help them.

She jets off on an action-packed adventure full of unusual planets, strange creatures and dangers she never imagined. Young readers will laugh out loud at each new exploit. This is sure to be a popular series with so much scope for new journeys, and fresh chaos, at every turn.

There is a real need for quality stories at this Year 2-4 age range. Space Blasters fits the bill perfectly. The focus on invention and scientific method will capture the interest of every young reader – even those who lean towards non-fiction. Suzie’s Chinese heritage brings another positive dimension to the story with authentic, diverse characters living a life many children will understand (except for the being sucked into space part).

Thank you to Farshore Books & Antonia Wilkinson for this fabulous book!
