Fear Files is back with the second book in this terrifying series. A Trick of the Light is a story to read with the lights on lest moving shadows, whispers in the wind and creaky floorboards send you diving under the covers!
Told from the dual point of view of case files from a ten-year-old unsolved mystery and a young girl’s experience on a school residential, readers are taken inside the story. Key words and events are explained through encyclopaedia entries, police reports and evidence found. Simultaneously, they see the story through Hazel’s eyes as she faces bullying, ghosts and horrifying hoaxes.
Howlsfield Manor is not your usual residential location with dark corners, ghost stories and Alice, a strange girl from another school, who offers to help Hazel get even with the mean girls who are ‘ghosting’ her. Turning the tables, Alice concocts an elaborate hoax aiming to give the girls a taste of their own medicine. With an old diary, a cursed poppet doll, and a ‘haunting’, the plan soon gets out of control. Readers won’t know who to trust. One thing is clear: don’t mess around with the supernatural!
The Fear Files series is fantastic for KS2 and KS3 readers who love a good scare. Unpredictable with captivating details about the original story and the current investigation, readers become a part of the search into what happened and why Howlsfield Manor has been abandoned for so long.
Thank you to Walker Books for an early read of this deliciously scary book!
