These high interest, low reading level books for readers age 11+ are new favourites in the SEND / Inclusion department of the secondary school where I’m Chair of Governors. It’s so refreshing to find books for struggling readers or students with EAL that look cool and so similar to what their peers are reading. Authors Steve Cole and Tanya Landman along with illustrators Berat Pekmezci, Cinthya Alvarez and Leo Trinidad have teamed up with dyslexia-friendly publisher Barrington Stoke to create books with short yet impactful text and engaging illustrations that reinforce what is being read. These are perfect as independent reads or in a set for a shared reading session young people will be excited to attend.

Stay Too Long by Steve Cole & Berat Pekmezci
An eerie horror story, readers find out what happens when you enter a haunted house on a dare. Heart-poundingly terrifying, this is a very grown-up story.

The Stranger’s Gift by Tanya Landman & Cinthya Alvarez
An updated version of the folktale Stone Soup, readers will enjoy the familiarity of the plot with a more grown-up feel. This book could prompt some great follow-up work with recipes.

Shelter by Steve Cole & Leo Trinidad
A terrifyingly real look at war in Ukraine. Danylo and his mum must build a shelter for protection from missile attacks. As war comes closer to their farm, they must face the devastating impact and look after one another.
