Dracula and Daughters: School for Slayers by Emma Carroll

Return to Temstown for the second blood-sucking mystery in Emma Carroll’s delightfully gothic Dracula & Daughters series. In School for Slayers, we find the granddaughters of Dracula himself opening their own business with the aim of healing vampires and keeping their city safe. Mina, Buffy and Bella know healing is so much better than slaying, if only they could convince the rest of the city that their services are what they all need. The new Guildmaster has other ideas. He wants to end to all talk of vampires and instructs them to close. He believes that, since the last Contagion, all vampires are gone and the city is ready to move on. The girls aren’t so sure and see there is still a need for this essential service. They need to find a way to stand up to the Guildmaster and prove women and girls can be successful and make valuable contributions to society.

Rumours that slaying lessons are happening at Poisonwood School for Boys cause even more worry. When the girls receive an anonymous note from someone at the school asking for help, they know they need to step in. Not only do they discover the boys practising slaying, but signs of a vampire attack as well. They jump straight into a dark mystery steeped in the history of the school and generations of vampires.

The intelligence of the main characters, layers of mystery and attention to detail make this an outstanding read! I love the literary references in characters’ names from Mr Coleridge to Mr Byron, John Keats, Timothy Shelley, Miss Bronte and more (including a raven called Poe). Aimed at readers aged 9+, there is as much for adults as there is for children in this brilliant story!
