Shadow Fox by Carlie Sorosiak

My Life as a Cat by Carlie Sorosiak was one of our family’s favourite books of 2020 so we’re always on the look out for new books by this fantastic author. I was thrilled when Shadow Fox arrived. The cover alone is so appealing with a gorgeous, firey fox and promise of an intriguing story!

Alongside a young girl, Beatrice, this intuitive and intelligent fox discovers the importance of protecting the natural world and the power of friendship in the face of difficulties. Told from the fox’s point of view, readers see the wildness of these elusive creatures. Thin, hungry and so cold in the snow, the fox is only looking for one thing – Nan. With soft humming, gentle fingers and provision of tasty trout, she’s the only human she doesn’t hate. When Nan goes missing, Beatrice and the fox team up to find her and make things right with the world once more.

Set in the secret islands of the Great Lakes in Minnesota, this story celebrates the wilderness. Personified in the fox, the magic and power of nature are more important than anything. If they are lost, everything is lost. Beatrice’s connection with the fox emphasises how connected humans are to the earth and their responsibility to keep it safe.

Written with the most beautiful language and description, red-haired Beatrice with her golden brown eyes, comforting and safe Nan, the ever earnest boatsman Stew and the intensely strong fox use all their senses to face darkness, loss and the hope of a positive future.

Thank you to Nosy Crow for this fantastic book!
