The Day My Dog Got Famous by Jen Carney

The Day My Dog Got Famous is a delightfully funny middle grade story of family, frenemies and the best pet ever!

Ferris Foster is a brilliant hero who wants nothing more than to win the Year 5 art challenge with his Astoundog cartoon and to earn enough money with his home-made comic book, The Hoot, to buy the best drawing tablet ever! The trouble is, his neighbour (and enemy) Destiny Dean keeps getting in his way.

When Destiny boasts about videos of her dog going viral, Ferris gets fed up and claims his own dog, Aldo, can become an even bigger star. The trouble is, Aldo really doesn’t have any kind of talent. Is possible to turn Aldo into Astoundog?

The Day My Dog Got Famous goes deeper than just a funny story of mishaps with Ferris’s unique family situation. He’s had 13 foster brothers and 8 foster sisters over the years and he’s just welcoming a new foster sister, Tia. Author Jen Carney explores the dedication and care of foster families and the challenges birth-children face as foster children come and go. This celebration of a different type of family is incredibly welcome and will help more children feel valued and see themselves in story.

In addition, one of Ferris’s foster sisters uses Makaton to help her communicate. Ferris is very protective of Keely because he knows how special she is and the inclusion of Makaton illustrations helps readers understand more about tools children use.
