Small Bites Back by Hannah Moffatt ~ Blog Tour

Small Bites Back

Small Bites Back is the delightfully bizarre and absolutely hilarious sequel to Small by Hannah Moffatt. 10-year-old Harvey is back at Madame Bogbrush’s School for Gifted Giants, even though he’s not really a giant. Cursed with being labelled “The Chosen One”, he feels the weight of the world on his shoulders when really he doesn’t feel the least bit special. If something unspeakable happens, does he actually have what it takes to save the day?

When unspeakable zombie clowns show up, he jumps into action. Faced with vampire dentists and tooth fairies as you’ve never imagined them (these ones bite!), Harvey and his friend Walloping Toenail find a way bring the situation back from the edge and out of “grave danger”.

I’m thrilled to welcome author Hannah Moffatt to my blog with a special guest post:

Imposter Syndrome: the sequel

My second book, SMALL BITES BACK is out this week. And while I’m giddily delighted, I’ll let you in on a secret: I’m also terrified.

When SMALL! was published, I described Harvey’s situation (being a boy on stilts attempting to pass for a giant) as a metaphor for my own imposter syndrome.

I assumed launching my first book would see me hit peak imposter.

I was wrong.

Nothing makes you feel more like an imposter than getting away with it once (I was genuinely blown away by the lovely things people said about Small!). Then trying to do it again.

And so, as I returned to the Stinking Sinking Swamp, I poured even more of myself into the story.

Here, in the sequel, is Harvey: a boy who has got away with it and convinced the human-hating giants to accept him. Except now they do more than that. Following a prediction from the school fortune teller at the end of the first book, they think Harvey is their chosen one. They pile expectation on his shoulders. When the zombie clowns come calling, putting the whole of Madame Bogbrush’s School for Gifted Giants in danger, they expect Harvey to save the day.

Harvey’s worry about whether he can be the hero his parents and friends need runs through the story. And even though I don’t think I was consciously doing it in early drafts – the final version mirrors the pressure I’ve put on myself all my life: from the first time I felt the glow of a teacher’s praise at school (and wanted more of it) through to today, watching my second story leave the safety of my laptop and make its way into the world.

I really, really, really hope you’ll enjoy catching up with Harvey Small and Walloping Toenail as they make new friends and attempt to save the swamp from the Unspeakable Circus. If you want me, I’ll be hiding in a corner.
