Ravencave by Marcus Sedgwick

Do you know who you are? James’ dad is fascinated by family ancestry. On holiday in the Yorkshire Dales, they explore the ruins of an old farm house and other historic family locations. Mum has always been the one in tune with those who have lived before – having genuine ghostly experiences. But this time, it seems it is James who sees a ghost – a young girl who beckons for him to follow her.

I read this book sitting in the warm sun with shivers running up my arms. It’s a powerful story of a family trying to find themselves after falling on hard times – Dad has lost his job, Mum is struggling to find her voice as an author now that the ideas have dried up and big brother, Robbie, is lost in being a moody teenager. James just can’t keep up with them and feels invisible. All he wants is for them to be happy.

As this chilling ghost story progresses, we long for James to find happiness and the answers to his many questions – what does this ghostly girl want and what will happen to his family next? The incomparable Marcus Sedgwick has left us with an unputdownable story of the love of a family who only want to help each other and a little brother who would do anything to make them all smile again.

Published by Barrington Stoke for age 11+, Ravencave is a must-have for secondary school libraries. Young people will be lost in this accessible story of love and loss.
