Book Review, Chapter Book (7-9)

The Book Cat by Polly Faber & Clara Vulliamy

This is a book for cat people and everyone else who has yet to realise that they are cat people too.

Based on the true story of a little cat who makes his home in the Faber and Faber offices during the Second World War, it’s a book full of charm, energy and the loyalty of cats.

Morgan was born in the London underground on the night of the first enemy bombers in September 1940. After struggles and loss, he finds himself trapped in the publishing offices with his favourite type of bed – a big pile of papers. Instead of being thrown out, he’s thrilled to land on his feet and be appointed two very important roles – Resident Mouser and Door Cat.

Life is wonderful. Hopeful authors come and go with treats for Morgan in an attempt to sweeten up the editors and he has so many cat friends at his club – The Cat’s Pyjamas. Morgan realises just how lucky he is but still misses his little family. The reality is that nine lives just aren’t enough for these war time cats. London is dangerous and it’s no place for a cat on the streets. Morgan makes it his mission to save his kitten friends by turning them into book cats and matching them up with authors who really need them. Not only does this keep the kittens safe but they make the writing so much better!

The Book Cat is a fantastic story for young readers who are making the transition from picture books to longer reads. It is the kind of book that is even better when shared. It would be wonderful for bedtime at home or as a class read in Years 2 or 3.

The gorgeous illustrations by Clara Vulliamy are so appealing. The personality of each cat shines through with fun, care, hope and inevitable mischief.  Combined with a beautiful hard cover, the layout and illustrations make The Book Cat very special. It already feels like a classic and a story that will be around for many, many years.

Thank you to Faber Books for this gorgeous book! We’re a family of cat lovers and it is perfect. My own book cats heartily approve!
