Midnight Magic by Michelle Harrison & illustrated by Elissa Elwick

Midnight Magic is a wonderfully charming verse novel from the magnificent Michelle Harrison (author of the A Pinch of Magic series). Published on the 1st October 2020, it is perfect for young readers on spooky autumn days leading up to Hallowe’en.

Midnight is a very special kitten – a beautiful black cat with rare magical powers. She goes looking for a home and when she finds Trixie, she knows she’s found a place where she will be loved. Trixie’s dad isn’t so sure about having a troublesome kitten in the house and wants the chaos to stop but mischievous Midnight just can’t help herself! With the help of Trixie’s Nan (who seems to understand Midnight’s powers – and likes to ride on a broom!), they go on an amazing adventure.

Midnight is both sweet and a little bit strange. She’s definitely not a witch’s familiar; this cat is the star of the story! The character of Nan is brilliant! She’s up for anything and doesn’t hesitate to put overprotective Dad in his place. Readers will giggle along with this extraordinary story full of fun!

Full of rhyme, alliteration and fabulous description, the language choices in this unique story are fantastic! Bold emphasis on key words sign post readers to nuance in the text and help them to understand the humour. The appealing purple colour scheme pulls readers in. Elissa Elwick’s illustrations are gorgeous and bring so much meaning to the words. This story is a great transition from picture books to chapter books and is sure to become a firm favourite that children come back to again and again.

Little Tiger has produced a pack of lesson resources to accompany this brilliant story.

My Hallowe’en cat, Sam

Black cats are wonderfully magical and mysterious but, surprisingly, are often among the last chosen from animal shelters. Having grown up with two beautiful, loving black cats myself, I find this so difficult to understand. We always thought our cats were quite lucky and they certainly gave us many, many years of joy.

Thank you to Little Tiger Press for this marvelously magical book!
