Umbrella by Elena Arevalo Melville

Clara is alone in the park when she comes across a very special umbrella. Not only does it give her exactly what she needs, but she is able to share this magical provider with everyone who comes along. Lessons of sharing, selflessness and community are emphasised in this positive, up-lifting story.

This ability to help others belongs to all of us and is something everyone can strive to do as they go about their day to day lives. There is diversity in the characters as people of different abilities, ages and genders are depicted beautifully. The repeated message of “Anything is possible!” is inspiring. Children will love the thrill of possibility as they are engaged by curiosity and wonder. They will never look at an old, discarded umbrella in the same way again!
