The Island Vet: Devil Bird Island by Gill Lewis & Irina Avgustinovich

I adore Gill Lewis’s The Island Vet series! With strong environmental messages and plenty of heart, they challenge children to stand up for wildlife and protect the world around them while developing caring, empathetic relationships with family, friends and their community.

Tia is absolutely fascinated by puffins! After a birthday trip to a museum to learn everything about them, she’s even more excited for their upcoming adventure to Devil Bird Island with a wildlife ranger, Tia, her mum, her best friend Nat, and Nat’s dad set off to count the puffins in their natural habitat.

The journey to the island begins with a kayak ride across calm, flat waters. When exploring the beach, they discover a loggerhead turtle tangled in a fishing net. The group works together to free the creature, realizing it has drifted far from its ocean home. Mum, the island’s vet, and Nat’s dad decide to take the turtle to Gull Haven, leaving Tia and Nat alone in their tent on the isolated island.

As night falls, an eerie stillness settles over Devil Bird Island. Strange, ghostly sounds begin to echo through the darkness outside their tent, testing the limits of Tia and Nat’s courage. What’s lurking out there?

Descriptions of the beauty of the islands, the immense night sky free from light pollution and full of stars, as well as the charming puffins bring this story to life. Readers are challenged to understand connections between coastal nations and just how much we all have in common. Awareness of how we can protect marine life and work together for a better world runs through every page of this gorgeous story. The Island Vet: Devil Bird Island would be a fantastic companion book to Hannah Gold’s Turtle Moon.

Barrington Stoke can always be relied on to create entertaining, meaningful, empathy-filled stories that are accessible and empowering for readers. With dyslexia-friendly font, spacing and page tint, everyone can enjoy these books. The manageable length and carefully chosen vocabulary encourages success and brings children back for more.

Slightly younger readers would also enjoy Gill Lewis’s Willow Wildthing series with a strong environmental message of conservation and teamwork. An extract from Willow Wildthing and the Magic Spell has been included in my Fiction & Poetry reading comprehension book for Year 2.
