The Island Vet: Pirates and Sea Monsters by Gill Lewis & Irina Avgustinovich

Stories by Gill Lewis are always gentle and heart-warming but with an incredibly strong message. A champion of nature, she leaves her readers with a sense of responsibility for taking care of our world.

The Island Vet series continues in this manner. It promises to be an absolutely charming series for readers age 7+ full of well-loved pets, interesting wild animals, a kind island community and a family settling into a new life. Readers will come away feeling empowered – they are capable of doing things to help and make a difference.

Like so many 7 year olds, Tia loves animals. Her mum is a vet and a wonderful role model. When they move to the island of Gull Haven, it’s clear they’re really needed. People are waiting with everything from lambs to seagulls who have become tangled in plastic. Tia is thrilled to be able to help Mum.

When Mum has to go out on a stormy night, Tia has to look after the animals. She faces pirates and sea monsters, realising just how dangerous life near the sea can be!

The Island Vet: Pirates and Sea Monsters is a lovely modern story that could be read alongside a study of Grace Darling or the seaside in Key Stage 1. I’m so glad there isn’t too long to wait for the second book – Rescue at Seal Bay – coming in August 2024.
