The Island Vet: Rescue at Seal Bay by Gill Lewis

I absolutely adored the first The Island Vet adventure, Pirates and Sea Monsters, in which Tia and her mum move to Gull Haven Island and discover a wonderful community of people and animals waiting for them. Tia realises the importance of her mum’s job as a vet and is able to help during a storm. I was thrilled to receive the second book in the series, Rescue at Seal Bay, which develops themes of caring for the environment and respecting wildlife.

It’s the summer holidays which means no school, helping at the vet hospital and going to the beach every day! The island is a busy place with all the holidaymakers. Tia and her new friend, Nat, need to find away to show the visitors how to look after the island by putting their rubbish in the bin and keeping their distance from wildlife. When one particularly selfish family don’t listen, frightening seals and running into trouble on their paddleboards, will the lifeboat crew spot them in time?

Tia’s passion for wildlife and doing the right thing is inspiring. Her personality jumps off the page along with those of her delightful pets – Pirate the cat & Norman the dog. Irina Avgustinovich’s charming illustrations bring the island to life and really help readers understand the full range of Tia’s emotions. This is a brilliant series to accompany a sea or lighthouse topic in Key Stage One or for young readers to take on holiday to the coast. Independent readers age 7+ will thoroughly enjoy them.

Barrington Stoke can always be relied on to create entertaining, meaningful, empathy-filled stories that are accessible and empowering for readers. With dyslexia-friendly font, spacing and page tint, everyone can enjoy these books. The manageable length and carefully chosen vocabulary encourages success and brings children back for more.
