Book Review, Chapter Book

The Summer Dolphin by Holly Webb & illustrated by David Dean

Holly Webb’s animal stories are so engaging. Full of relatable child characters and wonderful connections to animals, readers understand the importance of looking after wildlife and how much they can do themselves. Positive relationships with older family members reflect how much we can learn from those who have come before.

The Summer Dolphin takes readers to Wales with Lillie to stay in her grandparents’ new house. She feels like a bit of a baby when she has to share a room with her big sister and older cousin. They’ve paired up and are determined to make her feel left out.

Lillie is completely taken in by the wildlife they spot on their holiday, especially the dolphins who swim alongside the family on their boat trip. There are jellyfish, seabirds and seals as well as the most incredible scenery.

One day, the older girls push it too far and Lillie storms off to find the dolphins. She ends up in very real danger and needs the help of a friend to make her way back to her family. Perhaps this is the lesson the girls need to help them realise the importance of sisterhood and how much unkind words can hurt.

The Summer Dolphin and Holly Webb’s other stories are perfect for strong readers in Year 2 and onwards. Stories of ordinary families and the beauty of the natural world keep readers engaged page after page.
