Graphic novels open up a whole new way into reading for many children. Full of fantastic illustrations and super engaging stories, they are irresistable.
Peng and Spanners: Who Stole All the Pizzas? is the first in a new series by British author, animator and graphic designer Steve Webb.
When the school pizza parlour disappears, superheroes Pengtastic and Spanners know that only they can help the headmaster find his parlour before the school inspectors arrive and shut him down. They just have to defeat a pesky massive robot, avoid Cinderella the caretaker and break out of jail first.
My own graphic novel expert, my daughter Lucy, has enjoyed this book and provided a review:
Kids love graphic novels because they’re easy to read, colourful and quite often really funny.
Peng and Spanners: Who Stole All the Pizzas? is the story of an unusual penguin and a cat who meet when the penguin is sent to boarding school. The cat lives in the old tower next to the school. They decide they want to bring some adventure to this boring school by becoming the greatest superhero duo! When the school’s pizza restaurant is stolen, they know they are the pair to bring it back! As a reward for solving the mystery, Peng and Spanners get to choose a pizza. If you could have any type of pizza, what would you choose – strawberry laces and crisps, ice cream and beans or popcorn and peas? The possibilities are endless! Full of silliness and laugh-out-loud hijinks, this story is sure to keep younger readers entertained!
At the end of the book, author Steve Webb gives step-by-step instructions for how to draw Peng. This is really fun.
The second book in this super series, Peng and Spanners Meet Mr Big, will be published in August 2024.
