The Stupendous Sonny by Ellie Clements

I loved The Wondrous Prune by Ellie Clements so I was really excited when The Stupendous Sonny arrived on NetGalleyUK. Ellie has a fantastic talent for combining absolutely brilliant superpowers with heartfelt real life issues.

Sonny is just an ordinary kid – facing the challenges (and bullies) of high school, dealing with a younger brother and sister, hanging out with his best friend Elliot, and keeping everything going while mum works away from home. That is until one day, he discovers the most astrobulous thing. He has superpowers! Sonny can make things levitate, he can fly and he can teleport from one place to another. Life is never going to be the same again!

At first all of these uncontrolable powers seem like they’re just going to get Sonny in a whole lot of trouble. He doesn’t know how to explain it to anyone and it’s a huge mystery! Then Dad has a terrible accident. Without him to look after the family, no amount of powers will make a difference.

Sonny’s priorities change in the second half of the story. Now, the only thing that matters is Dad getting better and Mum coming home. When Aunt Cleo arrives to look after them, Sonny is skeptical. Mum and Cleo had a big falling out a few years ago and he doesn’t really know her. Is she someone he can trust with his secret?

Sonny realises there are lots of ways to be a superhero and that having these powers might not be so bad afterall. He can make a difference to his family and bring them all closer together.
