Book Review, Middle Grade Fiction

Arkspire by Jamie Littler

Arkspire is the fantastic first book in a brilliant new middle grade series by Jamie Littler, author of the Frostheart Triology.

In this captivating new world, dreams are divided by class. Children long to prove their worth so they might one day become an Arcanist – the city’s powerful, magically-gifted rulers. When an Arcanist dies, they pass their power on to a chosen successor. These chosen ones are much more likely to be “uppers” than “dreggers” in this unusual city.

The story opens with Elodie Bell and her unruly twin sister Juniper going to witness an inheritence – the passing of power to the next Arcanist. Elodie is inspired to become an Arcanist herself one day but Juniper only wants to be wild. Her destiny as a relic hunter seems sure.

Fast forward ten years and we meet the girls again – both on very different paths. A story of powerful magic and mishaps unfolds as the girls try to find their way to who they are meant to be. Heart-stopping action, incredibly detailed world-building and captivating characters create an unputdownable adventure. There is so much depth to this new world making the prospect of sequels so exciting.

It’s the illustrations that really make this book so appealing. From the engaging cover to the inside flaps depicting Arcanists in all their glory, a most unusual map of the Iris District and intriguing black and white drawings throughout, there is so much to look at and to help develop the world of Arkspire in young readers’ imaginations.
