Thunder Boots is a delightful picture book celebrating everyone’s unique talents and abilities. Encouraging acceptance, teamwork and an understanding that there is more than one way to learn, this is a wonderful book for EYFS classrooms. Told from a very young point of view, it will help teachers understand the children coming into their classrooms and how dyslexia might feel to someone so small.
Trixie is little but loud – full of energy and physically active. She loves to run, jump, cartwheel and dance. She sparkles, expressing herself through movement. Her neighbours always know when she’s at home – they call her Thunder Boots.
Life changes when Trixie is big enough to go to school. At first, she loves it. There are so many new things to try. But she soon finds that despite trying her best, learning letters is difficult. They dance across the page just like she dances across the room. Trixie shares her worries with her Dad and together they turn a struggle into a superpower.
Rebecca Ashdown’s illustrations are charming and energetic. The joys of being about four years old leap off the page. Young readers will identify with Trixie’s zest for life and develop empathy as they begin to understand that we’re all good at different things and even though we might struggle, there’s always a way forward. The emphasis on sharing worries with adults and the positive outcome will help children know who they can trust and that they don’t have to deal with things on their own.
Thank you to Oxford University Press for this lovely book!
