Winter’s Keep & the Weather Weaver series by Tamsin Mori

The Weather Weaver series by Tamsin Mori brings together the beauty of the Shetland islands with magical weather phenomena, the importance of family and the most charming little cloud called Nimbus.

The story begins with eleven year-old Stella heading north to spend the summer with her grandpa. She’s full of mixed feelings – memories of good times when Grandma was alive (puffins, selkies, hot chocolate and the lighthouse) but nervous about spending an entire summer away from her parents with the unpredictable sea, unnerving boats and Grandpa who just isn’t the same anymore.

Armed with her favourite book, Shetland Myths and Magic, Stella would love to explore the island and look for adventure. Sadly, Grandpa won’t let her out, giving every excuse to keep her inside. Then, she meets Tamar, a strange lady who seems to be able to speak to clouds and control the weather. The mystery and magic surrounding her is irresistible. Stella becomes a Weather Weaver, doing all she can to stop a sea witch and protect the island.

As the series develops, more Weather Weavers gather. Stella learns she is a part of an important legacy and there are others who understand her. With Nimbus by her side, there’s nothing she can’t handle. Her power is unstoppable. She finds she can face her fears – and overcome them!

This is a wonderful middle grade series for those who love Scottish stories, fantasy and adventure. Weather Weaver magic is so unique. These stories will stay with children long after they finish reading.
