Fablehouse by Emma Norry

Fablehouse by Emma Norry is the most wonderful combination of folklore, faeries, tales of King Arthur and longing to find a place where you truly belong. Magically charged, with an air of mystery and hope, this story lives and breathes. Readers find themselves on a heart-stopping adventure with Heather and her friends as they strive for acceptance and love.

It’s post-second world war. Racism is rife. Through no fault of their own , the children of African-American GIs and white British women are often considered unacceptable. Passed from pillar to post, it isn’t until they arrive at Fablehouse that they finally find peace. This crumbling mansion is now a children’s home surrounded by the most beautiful countryside. When Heather comes across a strangely enchanting cairn and Miss Isolde shows her the mysterious brown, leather book she found in the attic, things start to change.

A mysterious man claiming to be King Arthur’s Black Knight and signs there are faeries afoot confirm that a magical doorway has opened. Heather, Arlene, Lloyd and Nat must rely on an ancient magic and their own tenacity to put things right and protect the children of Fablehouse. Changelings, spies, a battle for control and a very real threat to the mortal realm force the children to fight for their home and stand up for those who have come before, those yet to come, and – most importantly – for themselves.

Fablehouse is an inspiring story of identity, friendship and strength. Heather learns that there is nothing to be gained in running away – she can only help if she stays. Finding that place worth fighting for means everything to her. Children of today may not be battling faeries or uncovering Arthurian legend but many will see themselves in this story. A longing to find a place where we belong, a longing to be accepted for who we are, a longing to stop running and rest in love is universal and so very real in this story.
