Into the Faerie Hill by H.S. Norup ~ Blog Tour

March 2023

Readers will lose themselves in this atmospheric mystery filled with hints of magic. An ominous undercurrent runs beneath the main plot, giving a sense that something significant is going to happen – something dark, something magical, something even more important than protecting nature from road works and development.

Alfred is sent to stay with his grandmother in her house on the edge of a magical landscape while his father works with a construction company on a tunneling project through a local hill. Protestors are out in force to protect this ancient site. This isn’t an ordinary place. Whispers in the grass, tiny creatures in the front garden, wooden carvings dotted around the house and Granny’s strange rituals make Alfie nervous.

He’s never felt quite the same as anyone else but the more time he spends there, the stranger he feels. When he meets a local girl called Saga, he finds himself becoming involved in the protests – and in the magic of the faerie hill. Something is calling to him. Could it be that there’s more to his family than he realises? What secrets have the past buried? Will he find the answers inside the faerie hill?

This is an intriguing story of folklore and finding yourself. Truth runs through the very centre of the story, challenging readers to not just accept what they’ve been told but to find out for themselves. Identity, family and the power of being unique will prompt children to be confident in who they are and embrace the magic they discover along the way.

Thank you to H.S. Norup and Pushkin Press for an early copy of this fantastic book!

The Hungry Ghost by H.S. Norup is another wonderful story of folklore and family. I was thrilled to be able to include an extract in my Contemporary Children’s Literature reading comprehension book for Years 5-6. You can read my review of The Hungry Ghost here.
