A Thing Called Snow by Yuval Zommer

A Thing Called Snow is a gorgeous picture book from Yuval Zommer celebrating the change of seasons in the far north and the beautiful magic of snow.

Hare and Fox are the best of friends. When the clever Tern tells them about a mysterious thing called snow just before setting off on his autumn migration, they are left wondering what it could be. They travel across the landscape asking everyone they meet. Kind arctic animals including Bear, Caribou, Salmon and Goose give them lots of descriptions but never actually tell them exactly what they are looking for.

The comparisons made by the helpful animals model wonderful language for young readers as they see that snow is white like fox and hare’s fur but also cold like their noses. This is also a book full of action. The enthusiastic animals bounce, leap and jump across the pages with a variety of verbs to develop children’s vocabulary.

Children will be drawn in by the beautiful illustrations as they travel with the animals through the forest, across the meadow, along the stream and around the lake to find a thing called snow.

Thank you to Oxford University Press for this delightfully wintery book!
