The Moonlight Zoo by Maudie Powell-Tuck & illustrated by Karl James Mountford

The Moonlight Zoo is a beautiful story of a little girl searching for her lost cat. Ella won’t give up until she’s found Luna who has been missing for two days! Looking under her bed, Ella finds the most magical zoo for lost pets. With smooth, moonbeam gates and gorgeous, soft colours, each page is full of friendly and appealing animals. A kind fox leads Ella through arctic, jungle and mountain regions until she finally hears the rumbly purr of her cat.

This is a lovely book for bedtime. With clever cut-outs and lots of shimmer, it’s a joy to hold. There is comfort that the lost animals are safe in the zoo and little Luna eventually finds her way back to where she belongs. It is an interesting take on “what’s under the bed?”. Rather than a scary monster, it’s a friendly, gentle place full of imagination.
