The Wanderdays: Journey to Fantome Island by Clare Povey

The Wanderdays: Journey to Fantome Island is absolutely brilliant! A fast-paced, environmental adventure with a group of incredibly clever kids in charge – it’s next level Spy Kids!

Flo and Joseph Wanderday are the children of one of the world’s greatest explorers, Nellie Wanderday. When this famous oceanographer and documentary creator goes missing on her latest expedition, the pair know they have to do something to help their mum. Following clues she’s left for them, Flo and Joseph team up with their best friends, Funmi and Isaac, to journey deep into the ocean.

This is a talented quartet. Flo wants to make documentaries just like her mum. She cares deeply about the environment and has a great sense of justice. No one is going to get away with hurting her mum or the Earth. Joseph is passionate about the ocean. He wants to attend a summer school for budding marine biologists and will protect the marine world at all costs. Funmi is a tech genius. She can fix almost anything and has extensive knowledge of the latest gadgets and systems. Isaac is the best friend anyone could ask for. He is loyal and strong – and he can identify pretty much any animal at a glance. Together, these four make a formidable team. Their friendship is put to the test as they face danger together, taking turns to be brave for each other and realising their full potential.

Clare Povey writes a fantastic villain! In The Wanderdays, it’s TV presenter and protector of the natural world Sir Frederick Titan. Almost “David Attenborough-esque” on the outside, in secret, he’s anything but. As the children search for their mother, they discover Sir Frederick’s secret island complete with scientific laboratory and evil lair! Like a James Bond villain, he’ll do anything to protect his interests and no one is getting away without a struggle.

Flo, Joseph, Funmi and Isaac set off on the adventure of a lifetime. “The ocean is an endless gift.” It’s magical yet terrifying – like the most incredible fantasy world but better! Readers will be inspired to find out more about the ocean and what we can do to protect it. They’ll see that kids really can do anything if they believe in themselves and have some great friends by their side!
