Mammoth Rider by S.J. Poyton

Mammoth Rider carried me away to the far north, blocking out everything else. This compelling environmental adventure is perfect for fans of Hannah Gold and Nicola Penfold.

Ash lives at an arctic research centre with her dad. The Mammoth Arctic Conservation Trust have edited the genes in Asian Elephant DNA to create a winter-proof creature. Basically, they are making the mammoth “unextinct”. Not one to follow the rules, Ash befriends a rare, white mammoth calf. Beautiful and wild, their friendship is based on inner strength, the power of nature and a trust like no other.

Ash dreams of becoming a Mammoth Rider but when a trophy hunter threatens these majestic creatures, she realises there is something even more important.

Characterisation and celebrating difference is at the heart of this story. With a dyslexic author and protagonist, it is accessible in plot, vocabulary and style (font, spacing and line justification). Mammoth Rider is a brilliant independent read for age 8+ and will be a fantastic read aloud at home or at school.
