The Subject Society: The Pythagoras Puzzle by Sarah Surgey & illustrated by Larisa Ivanković ~ Blog Tour

The Subject Society: The Pythagoras Puzzle is the first in a delightful new chapter book series for readers aged 6+. Warm and welcoming, it explores curious links between STEM and the Arts while valuing friendship, inclusion and kindness.

Mabel loves having fun with her friends (and avoiding her annoying brothers). She’s thrilled when her dad says they can use the garden shed as a clubhouse – if they create a club that will grow their minds. After careful consideration, they come up with a brilliant plan. “The Subject Society” will allow them to find out about all sorts of things – but where to start?

Théo has a violin exam coming up and he’s very worried about being out of tune. The Subject Society jump into action with their first topic – the mathematics of music. Making links to Pythagorus and the circle of fifths, the society helps Théo learn how to tune his violin and succeed at his exam.

Mabel has a hearing aid and uses sign language and lip reading, as well as speech, to help her communicate with her friends. This natural inclusion of SEND in a strong, intelligent character shows readers how normal it is to have a hearing difficulty, how friends can provide support and how it does not stop anyone from being a part of the group.
