Book Review, Middle Grade Fiction

The Impossible Gladiator by M.G. Leonard & illustrated by Manuel Sumberac

The Impossible Gladiator is the third thrilling adventure in the fantastic Time Keys series by M.G. Leonard. Blurring the lines of what’s possible, this incredible time travelling series will have readers listening out for doors to the past, hoping they, themselves, might be a time key. Merging music and mystery with unique characters who show readers what it means to be brave and resilient, these stories pull us right into the past. Engaging details about all aspects of life from food and clothing to class systems and survival, reflect the differences, but also the similarities, of life in another time.

People who are time keys use musical instruments to harmonise with the resonant frequency of time doors. When they find just the right note, the door opens allowing them to step through time. Sim is a bit different. He doesn’t have an instrument. Instead, the music is inside of him. A tuning fork draws out this incredible power. With his cousin, Jeopardy, and his best friend, Nelson, Sim evades the villainous Council of Keys while solving mysteries in the past.

In The Impossible Gladiator, a famous magician has disappeared. A strange message sent through a Roman poet convinces the magician’s sister that he’s been forced into another time. A race through Rome – across three time periods – reveals a captivating, heart-pounding adventure.

Readers who enjoy learning about Ancient Rome in The Impossible Gladiator will also enjoy the Circus Maximus series by Annelise Gray and Vita and the Gladiator by Ally Sherrick. A few years ago, the Romans stood out as a time period missing from middle grade fiction so it is wonderful to see more stories emerging that capture the essence of it all.
