The Accidental Vikings by Karen McCombie & illustrated by Annell Bray

A trip to Jorvik Viking Centre in York is a museum visit you’ll never forget. This fascinating historic site is the inspiration for The Accidental Vikings. Karen McCombie captures all the unique features of this amazing place. I first visited Jorvik when I was 9 years old and still remember travelling back in time in the moving capsules surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds of the past.

The Accidental Vikings is a thrilling historical, time-slip adventure. There’s so much packed into just 72 pages. It would be a wonderfully accessible text for a Key Stage 2 Viking topic, allowing everyone to read the same book.

Alfie and Kat are on a school trip to the Viking museum. Alfie is enjoying the day, particularly the member of museum staff dressed in a very convincing Viking costume. Kat, however, isn’t interested and really can’t be bothered, especially when the two of them end up in Viking costumes and are asked to trial some new earphones during the tour.

A bump and a crash cause them to accidentally travel back in time. Kat and Alfie experience life in Viking Britain firsthand, dispelling some common misconceptions along the way (no, Vikings don’t wear helmets with horns). Settlements, longhouses, families, language, food, the class system and even toilets are clearly depicted within a great adventure. The history of multi-cultural Britain is explored through the Danes, English, and other travellers from all over the world.

Barrington Stoke can always be relied on to create entertaining, meaningful, empathy-filled stories that are accessible and empowering for readers. With dyslexia-friendly font, spacing and page tint, everyone can enjoy these books. The manageable length and carefully chosen vocabulary encourages success and brings children back for more.
