The Blitz Sisters is a lovely story of how three sisters try to make sense of life and do their best to carry on through all the challenges of the Second World War. With gas masks to contend with, fear of evacuation and new hardships as war is declared, Lydia, Peggy and Teddy are forced into a life they never imagined. Fortunately, they have each other and can face anything together.
In this uniquely structured, three-part sage, readers are invited to journey through the war with the girls. Lydia’s story takes place in 1939. Aunt Phoebe agrees to take them in so the sisters are evacuated to the countryside. Life is so different from London. When Lydia senses something is wrong at home, she sets off on a dangerous quest. Peggy’s story finds the girls back in war-torn London in 1943. A German friend inspires dreams of art school. Finally, Teddy’s story brings the end of the war. Life is full of joy and hope but there is so much to rebuild. Teddy has the opportunity to travel to Paris on a school trip – but she has a secret.
Faber Children’s has calledThe Blitz Sisters “Little Women for younger readers” and I completely agree. A cosy story of sisterhood, loss, life and dreams, it pulls readers right into the heart of the family.
