The Wintermoor Lights by Dan Smith

Return to The Nighthouse Files with a second terrifying mystery. This secret organisation investigates strange events around the world. Delving into the unexplained, they search for truth in an attempt to not only find answers, but prevent the horrors from happening again.

Unusual lights over Wintermoor Lake are causing young people to act in strange ways. Pulled into a trance and muttering about being “chosen” while reciting a series of numbers. there is no sense to their actions. Adults think it’s a prank and no one will listen to Tara as she tries to explain what she knows. One by one, her friends turn against her. Searching for some sort of explanation, Tara uncovers a historical pattern that suggests the mystery is destined to repeat itself.

80’s nostalgia pulses through this eerie story. References to films, hairstyles, fashion and the good old Sony Walkman will charm adult readers and show teens a little bit of our childhood. Luke Brookes’s fantastic illustrations match this vibe and ramp up the fear. As autumn nights draw in, don’t read this too close to bed time!

Published by Barrington Stoke, The Wintermoor Lights is mystery-horror for teens and adults (recommended age 11+). Accessible with dyslexia-friendly font and page tint, it is sure to be devoured by brave readers from Year 5 well into Key Stage 3. The addition of a range of text types like diaries, case reports and interviews brings readers back to the present and gives an additional sense of importance to the story Tara’s sharing. Dan Smith’s inclusion of himself as the interviewer in the final pages will leave readers questioning whether this really is just a story…
