Gina Kaminski is a girl to be reckoned with! I adored Gina Kaminski Saves the Wolf in 2023 and am thrilled to see another fantastic alternative fairy tale by Craig Barr-Green and Francis Martin!
In Gina Kaminski Rescues the Giant, this spirited little girl lets everyone know what she thinks. On a school trip to the art gallery, she spends some time in the Reading Room and picks up a very familiar tale. According to Gina, the story of Jack and the Beanstalk is full of BIG mistakes and she’s going to fix them! She communicates through her feelings chart with face emojis and by explaining to readers just what she’s going to do to make sure the giant is fairly treated and not misunderstood as a villain. Taking on the role of the hero, she takes the cow to market and makes a much better deal with the mysterious bean seller than the original Jack managed. With two cakes as well as the three magic beans, she happily meets the giant and stops the villagers from stealing from him. Everything makes sense and Gina feels content.
The Gina Kaminski stories are wonderfully inclusive and uplifting. Starring a neurodiverse main character, they are honest and illuminating – demonstrating the strategies that help Gina communicate her feelings, her lovely relationship with a teaching assistant and actions that make her school trip to the art gallery a success. This is a fantastic book for sharing in EYFS or KS1, allowing children with similar strategies to feel validated in themselves and for others to develop understanding and empathy. The twist on a traditional tale makes it a lovely addition to any alternative fairy tale collection.
Thank you to Little Tiger for this gorgeous book!
