The Coming of the Iron Man by Ted Hughes & illustrated by Mini Grey

The well-loved classic story of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes has been reimagined and brought to life in picture book format by the incredibly talented Mini Grey. Full of colour, bold text and an engaging story, this beautiful book will completely captivate readers.

When the very unusual, very hungry Iron Man appears in the countryside, the farmers don’t know what to do! He’s eating their machinary and leaving gigantic footprints on their land. They decide to dig a huge hole to capture the Iron Man and put a stop to his destruction. At first Hogarth, a farmer’s son, agrees to help but he soon realises that all the Iron Man needs is help to find a place where he can eat without destroying the property of others.

Perfect for reading aloud in class or at home, The Coming of the Iron Man is sure to be shared again and again. Playing with language through onomatopaeia, repeated phrases and emphasis, children will want to join in with the reading and take on characters through intonation and expression.

Created in such an accessible, picture book style, this book can be used to explore plot, character development and descriptive word choice across Key Stage One and Lower Key Stage Two. It is a must-have for school and classroom libraries and would make a lovely gift.

Thank you to Faber for an early copy of such a wonderful book! It will be published in August 2025.
