It’s my great pleasure to share this stunning portrait of Shin Saimdang:
The most famous woman from the Joseon kingdom was Shin Saimdang, who was born in 1504. A painter, embroiderer, poet and calligrapher, her beautiful flower and insect paintings can be seen in museums around the world today. How did Saimdang achieve all this in such a strict society? We don’t know a lot about Saimdang, but it is said she was encouraged to paint by her family. This determined and super-talented woman will not be forgotten as she is celebrated all over Korea as the face of the 50,000 won note.
