Valley of the Vikings by Liz Kessler

Emily Windsnap is back with another wonderfully delightful fantasy adventure – her tenth in a series spanning twenty years. This “semi-mer” – half human, half mermaid – is embracing who she is and loves solving mysteries with friends, whether it’s under the sea or on land.

Valley of the Vikings is full of magic, myth and mermaids. 12 year-old Emily is swimming with her friend Shona when she finds a bangle with a glowing blue crystal. Later, when she visits the amusements on the peer, she asks Mystic Millie if she knows anything about the beautiful stone. It seems to be very rare – a blue dumoanthratite. Connections to Halflight Castle, an epic battle between the gods Neptune and Thor and tales of a missing Viking ship prompt Emiliy to set off on a journey of research and discovery.

The rumbling of tectonic plates, a deep chasm at the bottom of the ocean and the impact of mining the seabed provide opportunities to discuss our use of the world’s resources and how the actions of humans (and mythical gods) can harm the Earth. The lost Vikings bring a fascinating aspect of history and highlight consequences of rulers’ selfish actions.

Valley of the Vikings is perfect for fans of the Isadora Moon stories who have grown up a little bit. Navigating the reality of being half one thing and half another can be tricky but Emily embraces it with ease.
