There are no women in history – or that’s how it appears when you read history books going all the way back to the very first in the year 731. Author Philippa Gregory is determined to right this wrong, first through Normal Women: 900 Years of Women Making History published for adults in 2023, and now through this new version adapted for teens.
Divided into significant periods of history, each chapter prompts readers to consider women’s place at the very centre of history. Fascinating and sometimes shocking, it challenges the male-only perspective that has dominated history for so long.
Headings such as “Normal Women are Many Races”, “Normal Women are Artists”, “Normal Women Stand Up Against Slavery” and “Normal Women are Single and Happy” show real life in all its forms. Short sections, well-spaced text and accessible vocabulary make this detailed book very readable.
My daughter is currently taking A-level History and is planning to study History at university. She’s currently writing her EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) on the individual impact and legacy of the wives of Henry VIII and has included Philippa Gregory in her research. She’s so intrigued by this edition of Normal Women: Making History for 900 Years. It’s definitely going to find a home on her bookshelf and she’s planning to take it into school to share with her History teachers. This is the perfect addition to texts so often written by “old white men” and a great companion to GCSE and A-Level History.
A huge thank you to Farshore for a copy of this fantastic book!
