I adore the Call the Puffins series – perfectly-sized chapter books with charming characters and fun stories that champion teamwork. Set on the Island of Egg, they celebrate wildlife, safety and looking after one another. Children can follow their favourite puffins through each adventure. A series like this is fantastic for newly independent readers as there is always another book ready for them with familiar vocabularly and context.
In book 4, Tiny and the Cave Ghost, things take a spooky turn. The puffin friends are taking part in Puffin Power training, where they can practise and demonstrate all the things they’ve learned as they work towards becoming Puffin Rescuers. When a little, yellow chick goes missing, the rescuers jump into action. After hearing the story of “The Wandering Ghost”, they’re hesitant to search the dark, spooky caves but they gather their courage and do all they can to bring the little bird back to safety.
Tiny is keen to live his Puffin Promise every day. Through the gentle peril of the story, young readers see a wonderful example of bravery, dedication and concern for others. Ella Okstad’s gorgeous illustrations bring this trustworthy team to life, creating friends readers will always remember.
