The first book in the new Teen Horror series Serial Chillers is everything you could hope for and more! Witty, dark and downright horrifying, Jennifer Killick has raised her game. The Witch in the Woods is next-level creepy and will have you avoiding any local woods for the foreseeable future. I settled right into the familiar, absorbing style and didn’t want to put it down.
Hazard is town full of disturbing stories. A sinister founder, mysterious sink holes, missing people, the hanging tree in Execution Square and rumours of ‘Blood-Eyed Mary’ haunting the woods make for great tourist attractions but cause the locals to live slightly on edge. Travis is used to it but his new friend Zayd, who recently moved to Hazard, is thrilled with the town’s nightmarish history. A school trip to the Hazard Museum to research an aspect of local urban history sets them on a dangerous path.
The first threat to their project is their assigned team. Seline is the most popular girl in school. Shiny and annoying, it’s her way or the highway. She doesn’t like Travis and she’s not going to hide it. Danielle used to be Travis’s friend but she’s changed. Now it seems it’s more important to impress Seline than be true to who she really is. Begrudingly, the foursome decide to research ‘Blood-Eyed Mary’ – a witch who is rumoured to live in the woods killing anyone who wanders into the trees. Of course, they need to discover the truth first-hand so they make a plan to meet at the edge of the woods.
What follows is a night of jump scares, what Travis and Zayd hope are pranks, and heart-stopping terrors. The group will never be the same again. Discovering unimaginable truths about the town’s history, the must decide what to do with the information – if they make it home.
Jennifer Killick’s talent for developing a brilliant ensemble cast continues in this new series. Each teen has their own important story and unique personality that drives the adventure forward. Her knack for inventing the most horrible creatures shines through as well. Readers face a mix of disgust and dread that will make their skin crawl. Hazard is overflowing with creepy stories, providing fuel for a brilliant series to come. I can’t wait for the next instalment when they venture into the mines of Hazard!
