The Notwitches by Gary Panton is absolutely delightful. Endless creativity, a cast of larger than life characters and bizarre, laugh-out-loud moments make this one of my favourite recent reads. Warm and engaging, Melanda Notwitch is a heroine to really get behind.
Melanda loves stories. She loves listening to them and writing her own. Unfortunately, her own life doesn’t seem to have a happy ending. Stuck with her three horrible aunts, she’s living a Cinderella-like life. When an enthusiastic young witch called Mitch arrives at her door, Melanda realises there might be a way out. Mitch knows a magic spell that will make everything better – all they need is one very special magical ingredient.
The two determined girls (and a charming cat) set off on a hopeful quest to find a mermaid. As they journey onwards, they join forces with a burly motorcycle gang sharing stories along the way.
Brilliant vocabulary and short, fun chapters keep readers engaged and move the story along. Dotty Sutton’s wonderful illustrations add so much to this already hilarious tale. The characters leap off the page and have the potential to become iconic. I can’t wait for another Notwitches story!
