Swop: The Daring Dinosaur Detective by Lucy Noguera & illustrated by James Cottell

Swop is back in his second epic adventure! This absolutely adorable, teeny tiny pup will leap into your heart as he helps his owner Ernie solve a huge mystery!

Ernie is really looking forward to his school trip to the Natural History Museum. It was always his favourite place to visit with his dad before he passed away. Going again will feel strange but Ernie knows so much about dinosaurs and can’t wait to see all the fossils. The trouble is, their landlord won’t let them keep pets and he’s coming to fix the radiators so Ernie has no choice but to take Swop with him to the museum. What could possibly go wrong?

Actually, keeping a miniature pup secret in a backpack is much harder than it seems. Navigating the bus, the museum bag storage and the long period between arriving and lunchtime makes it tricky for Ernie to check Swop is doing ok. When they go to collect their bags for lunch, Ernie can’t find his. It’s missing! Could the suspicious twins they met on the way in have something to do with it?

Swop and the backpack aren’t the only things missing. A rare dinosaur fossil that’s only just arrived from Argentina has also disappeared! The paleontologists are desperate to find it. Perhaps the two mysteries are connected. There must be thieves among them – Ernie and his friends just need to prove it.

Swop: The Daring Dinosaur Detective is a fantastic adventure for readers age 7+. It would right at home on the shelves of Year 2-4 classrooms. The addition of Ernie’s sister, Ivy, who is deaf and uses British Sign Language adds further elements of inclusion and empathy to an already heartfelt story.
