Me and My Brian by Helen Rutter

Me and My Brian is another entertaining and enriching story from Helen Rutter. Exploring the impact of family stress on relationships and mental health, it provides readers with very real strategies for dealing with an overactive brain that threatens to get the better of them.

Josh has always had a mixed relationship with his brain (or “Brian” as he mistakenly called it when he was little). It’s his best friend and his worst enemy. He loves it because it gives him all sorts of fantastic ideas but he struggles when it just won’t be quiet. Constant negative messages lead to anxiety and frustration. Sometimes his brain is just too loud!

Josh’s older brother and his mum seem to argue all the time. Josh looks up to Charlie and just wants them to get along. When Charlie moves in with their dad full time and Mum can’t stop crying, Josh struggles to cope. He blames himself for his family’s problems as his “brian” gets louder and louder. Josh is sent to stay with his grandma over the school break. She went ‘off-grid’ a number of years ago in favour of a simple life far from anything. At first, Josh doesn’t know how he’ll cope but, over time, Grandma helps him to understand his brain and find ways to quieten the noise.

Me and My Brian is surprisingly powerful and poignant for a shorter story. Readers are reminded that their brain is not the only part of them that matters. Their heart, soul, humour and spirit all work together to make us who we are. Josh models for readers how to overcome difficulties and develop positive mental habits that lead to coping with challenges and, eventually, happiness.
