Book Review, Middle Grade Fiction

Stellar by Chris Bradford

Stellar is a heart-stopping, out-of-this-world adventure. Stella and her brother, Ryan, are on holiday at a space hotel orbiting Earth. Stella loves everything about space while Ryan thinks it’s all a bit boring. He prefers navigating spaceships in his VR video games. According to him, nothing interesting ever happens out in space but Ryan couldn’t be more wrong!

Their parents arrange for an expedition to the International Space Station museum. When a massive solar flare sends out dangerous radiation, they have limited time to get back to their hotel. Disaster strikes and Ryan goes tumbling into deep space. In a split second, Stella pushes all fear aside and goes after him. Will they make it back to the space hotel in time?

Stellar is an exciting story of courage and working as a team. Stella’s knowledge of the stars and Ryan’s transferrable skills from his video games shows them there is nothing they can’t do if they keep their wits about them. This is the perfect book for kids who loved television shows like “Miles from Tomorrowland” when they were small – a brother and sister working together to solve problems in space and get home safely.

Published by Barrington Stoke, Stellar is not only engaging but accessible too. With dyslexia-friendly font, spacing and page tint, everyone can enjoy it. The manageable length and carefully chosen vocabulary encourages success and brings children back for more.
