Betsy Buglove and the Brave Butterfly by Catherine Jacob & Lucy Fleming

Betsy Buglove is back in her second picture book celebrating the natural world and the wonderful insects that inhabit it.

In Betsy Buglove and the Brave Butterfly, Betsy and her friend Stan look at all sorts of insects through her magical magnifying glass. When they come across a butterfly stuck inside an upturned glass of sticky juice, they don’t hesitate to help. But their help doesn’t stop there! The butterfly’s babies are in danger. Little caterpillars have been munching on Dad’s plants and he’s getting fed up. He turns to some bug spray to get rid of them but Betsy comes up with a better plan. If Dad stopped weeding out so many thistles and left them for the caterpillars to eat, they’d leave his veg patch alone! Betsy and Stan save the caterpillars who turn into beautiful butterflies just like their mother.

This is a fantastic story of children spotting a problem and taking action. Young readers will feel inspired to make a difference in the world with actions they can really do. Betsy and Stan are polite yet determined in their quest to look after the smallest creatures in the garden.

Betsy Buglove and the Brave Butterfly is the perfect accompaniment to a summer science topic on habitats, ecosystems, plants or gardens. Children in EYFS and KS1 will enjoy reading it together and talking about what they can do to make a difference.

Thank you to Scholastic for this lovely book!
