Murder in Velvet by Sarah Wynne (Review by Kate & Charlie, age 16)

Murder in Velvet is an exciting mystery full of peril and heart-pounding moments.

13-year-old Grace is on her way to school with her best friend, Suzy. She needs a new coat (even though her mum says her old one is fine). She spots a green velvet coat in the charity shop window and falls in love with it. After school, Grace takes a short cut to get away from some bullies and ends up in a dark alley. She has a strange vision of another girl in an old mansion wearing the same coat. What is going on? Who is the girl? Why is Grace seeing her?

The visions keep happening and Grace realises they must be linked to her new coat. Things start to get really intense when Grace has a vision of a murder! A coded diary found in the pocket of the coat takes her down a mysterious path as she begins to piece it all together.  Grace and Suzy reach out to those who might have known the strange girl hoping they can help. It turns out some people from the past don’t want this story brought to light. Instead of answers, the girls find themselves in danger.

Suzy is a wonderfully relatable character with her dyed hair, love of her phone and frustration with having to get a dress for a family wedding. She’s so much fun with her comedic lines and light-hearted approach to life. She’s a great friend who wants to look after Grace and sticks with her through it all.

Readers will love figuring out the mystery right along with Grace as clues unfold in front of them. They’ll find themselves shouting at the characters to stay away from dodgy situations and keep themselves safe. There’s danger around every corner as the girls find themselves in one perilous situation after another.

Murder in Velvet is perfect for fans of Aveline Jones and the Murder Most Unladylike series.  It’s quite tense at times so would be best for readers in Upper Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3.
