In 2019, author Neil Gaiman asked his Twitter followers: What reminds you of warmth? From the thousands of replies, he composed an extraordinary poem in aid of UNHCR’s 2019 winter appeal (the UN Refugee Agency). What You Need to be Warm is this same poem in a stunning, hardback book.
As nights get longer and the temperature drops, what reminds you of warmth? Is it a roaring fire, a cosy blanket, or the smile of a friend? Do we take our warmth for granted? Do we offer warmth to others? What You Need to be Warm challenges readers to think about their own experiences and those of others.
Images from thirteen talented illustrators accompany this powerful poem: Chris Riddell, Benji Davies, Yuliya Gwilym, Nadine Kaadan, Daniel Egneus, Pam Smy, Petr Horacek, Beth Suzanna, Bagram Ibatoulline, Marie-Alice Harel, Majid Adin and Richard Jones with an eye-catching cover by Oliver Jeffers. Each gives their own interpretation of warmth, hope and welcome.
A collection of fond memories gently turns to the cold reality faced by those who are displaced and fleeing from conflict. They have had to leave warmth behind. They are out in the wilderness or on stormy seas trying to find a place of warmth and welcome once more. Neil Gaiman challenges readers to be that warmth – to be that welcome – with a kind word and acknowledgement that we all have the right to be here.
Sometimes it only takes a stranger in a dark place…
to say we have the right to be here,
to make us warm in the coldest season.
