Imperfectly Perfect by Perry Emerson & Hoang Giang

Learning to find beauty in imperfections is an imporant lesson. In Imperfectly Perfect, little Maria feels crumpled when she accidently damages her brother’s favourite book. Not only is she upset about the book but also by the damage to her relationship with Robbie.

In her wisdom, Bea helps Maria to recognise all the things in life that are imperfect. Maria begins to understand that every broken thing has a story and there is beauty where it has been mended. She rushes home to do her best to mend the broken book and her relationship with her brother.

Imperfectly Perfect is a beautiful picture book that shows children a very real family with scenes they can relate to. The inclusion of details like the family cat, wonky veg at the market, children playing at the park and a cold, stormy sky will encourage interest and empathy. Maria is such a charming character. Young readers will identify with how upset she feels when her brother is angry, her determination to make things right and her love of pompoms – even if they aren’t the best choice for repairing the book.

This will be a lovely addition to any Foundation Stage or Key Stage One library. It will also be perfect for cuddling up with at home and choosing to read again when siblings fall out – reminding everyone of the beauty in imperfection.

Thank you to Little Tiger for this beautiful book!
