Adoette lived on the same street her entire life – until she was 100 years old. She saw so many changes: family celebrations, war, destruction and rebuilding. Many people came and went but Adoette remained.

This beautiful, thought-provoking picture book is the story of a very special tree. Readers will follow Adoette from the time houses were first built around her until some people thought she was so big that she was causing problems and the council decided to cut her down. Although others fought for her to stay, the sad day came when she was removed. Eventually, the community began to learn the importance of preserving trees and making space for nature. With this new attitude, Adoette’s seed can grow into another mighty tree to watch over the street for generations to come.
Adoette is accompanied by teaching notes prepared by CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education). Focussing on community, environmental and historical concepts, it may be used in primary classes to explore the impact of trees and our impact on them. Adoette would be fantastic to use across school as an assembly read aloud or as an inspiration for class work contributing to a whole school project.
