I’ve loved revisiting some of my favourite fairy tales with a very modern twist. Girls challenges our preconceived notions of how these stories should go. There are no princes to save the day and everyone isn’t always “living happily ever after” but the girls in these stories are tough, resilient and fight for their own place in the world.
The seven stories included in this collection are thought-provoking on their own but even more powerful when readers are familiar with the original traditional tales and able to compare. Girls would work well as the foundation for an English unit in Year 6. By exploring the stories children have grown up with and looking at these alternative interpretations, children will be inspired to write their own versions and challenge norms even further.
Thank you to Pushkin Press for an early read of this fantastic book!
