Book Review, Middle Grade Fiction

Operation Banana by Tony Bradman & illustrated by Tania Rex

It’s November 1942 – the middle of the second world war. Susan’s mum works long hours at the factory while her dad is in North Africa and they haven’t heard from him in months. Worries pile on top of worries. Susan just wants to make her mum happy and she has the perfect idea – a banana! With rationing, treats are hard to come by so she has to be creative. Susan promised her dad she’d be good but the black market might be the only option. Is it worth the risk to make mum smile again?

Tony Bradman’s war stories are perfect for young readers. Accessible and engaging, they address the issues that mean the world to children. Worries about their parents, friends and day to day needs are all things modern children can relate to. Characters like Susan are not aware of the hugeness of war but just how it affects them personally. Readers learn what is was like to be a child of war and the impact on those left at home.

Bruno and Frida & Daisy and the Unknown Warrior are two other must-reads from Tony Bradman and Tania Rex. Both are incredibly powerful stories giving glimpses into aspects of war children may not be familiar with.
